A Russian drone struck a Ukrainian passenger train near the country’s border with Poland on Sunday, shortly after a diplomatic train carrying former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and other senior European figures had passed through the same railway area. The incident has raised fresh concerns about the security of rail routes used by foreign delegations and the growing proximity of the war to NATO territory.
The attack took place near Yahodyn station in western Ukraine, roughly two kilometres from the Polish border. According to Ukraine’s state railway operator, Ukrzaliznytsia, the targeted train was evacuated after an incoming drone was detected, and no casualties were reported. The drone struck the locomotive, leaving the train damaged.
Johnson and former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt were among the prominent figures travelling through the area after attending the Yalta European Strategy conference in Kyiv. Their diplomatic train had reportedly left Yahodyn earlier than scheduled following a warning, allowing it to pass through before the strike. Former CIA Director David Petraeus was also in the area, travelling on another train that remained at the station.
Ukrzaliznytsia said it was possible that the diplomatic train had been the intended target, although that has not been independently established. The railway operator said train schedules are routinely adjusted in real time because of the continuing threat of Russian attacks. The timing of the incident has nevertheless intensified questions over whether the presence of senior European officials influenced the choice of target.
Johnson strongly condemned the strike, describing the attack as part of the danger faced by Ukrainians using civilian railways. His comments also renewed calls for stronger air-defence support for Ukraine.
The incident occurred during a broader wave of Russian attacks across Ukraine. Ukrainian officials have repeatedly warned that railway infrastructure remains a critical target because trains are essential for civilian transportation, military logistics and the movement of international delegations.
The proximity of the strike to Poland has also given the incident wider significance. Poland is a NATO member, and attacks close to its frontier are being closely watched by European governments concerned about the possibility of the war creating increasingly dangerous spillover risks. Polish authorities previously responded to another nearby strike by temporarily closing the Yahodyn-Dorohusk border crossing.
For Ukraine, the episode highlights the continuing vulnerability of its railway network despite extensive security measures. For Europe, it is another reminder that Russia’s war is unfolding close to the borders of the NATO alliance, increasing pressure on Western governments to strengthen Ukraine’s air defences and prepare for further escalation.
While there were no reported casualties in the train attack, the incident has become a significant security concern because of its timing, location and the presence of prominent European figures on the same railway route only shortly beforehand.
