The attendance was the seventh-largest for an NFL regular-season game.
The 49ers controlled much of the contest behind quarterback Brock Purdy, who delivered an impressive performance under the international spotlight. Purdy completed 25 of 34 passes for 205 yards and threw three touchdown passes, finding Mike Evans, Demarcus Robinson and Deebo Samuel for scores.
San Francisco established control early, taking a 3-0 lead before extending its advantage with a touchdown pass from Purdy to Robinson. The Rams managed to respond through Kyren Williams, whose rushing touchdown briefly brought Los Angeles level at 7-7.
That moment, however, proved to be the high point of the Rams' offensive effort.
The 49ers responded with 20 unanswered points, steadily pulling away as their defense frustrated a Los Angeles offense that had entered the season with significant expectations. The San Francisco defense held the Rams to 290 total yards and produced a crucial goal-line stand when Los Angeles failed to convert on fourth down near the 1-yard line.
Purdy's connection with Evans was another highlight. The veteran receiver, making his 49ers debut, caught six passes and scored his first touchdown for the team. Samuel also marked his return to San Francisco with a touchdown, adding another important storyline to an already memorable night.
For the Rams, the defeat was particularly disappointing given the expectations surrounding the team. Quarterback Matthew Stafford finished with 155 passing yards, while Los Angeles struggled to maintain offensive momentum after halftime. Defensive newcomer Myles Garrett also endured a difficult debut, failing to make a tackle as San Francisco's offensive line limited his influence.
Preparation may also become part of the post-game discussion. The 49ers arrived in Melbourne roughly a week before the contest, allowing players to adjust gradually to the time difference and unfamiliar surroundings. The Rams, by contrast, arrived only about a day before kickoff. Head coach Sean McVay acknowledged his team's shortcomings after the defeat, although the extent to which travel affected the result will remain a matter of debate.
Beyond the result, the game represented a significant moment for the NFL's international ambitions. More than 100,000 fans filled the MCG, demonstrating the growing interest in American football in Australia.
