NATO fighter jets have shot down an unidentified drone after it entered Lithuanian airspace, prompting renewed concern over security along the alliance’s eastern flank and highlighting the growing risks posed by the Russia-Ukraine war to neighboring NATO countries.
The incident occurred shortly after midnight on Tuesday, September 15, according to Lithuania’s National Crisis Management Centre. The drone was detected after entering Lithuanian airspace from the direction of Belarus and was eventually destroyed near Pratkunai, a rural area close to Kaunas, Lithuania’s second-largest city. Authorities said the precise origin and identity of the drone had not yet been established.
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda confirmed the incident and praised NATO personnel for their rapid response. He stressed that maintaining a high level of readiness was increasingly important as Russia’s war against Ukraine continued to intensify. Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys also welcomed the response, describing NATO as vigilant and prepared to protect the country’s airspace.
The incident triggered an airspace alert in Vilnius and surrounding areas, underscoring how quickly an unidentified aircraft can create concern in a region already operating under heightened security conditions. Authorities are examining the recovered wreckage to determine what type of drone was involved, who operated it and whether it was carrying any form of explosive payload.
For Lithuania and its Baltic neighbors, the incident carries significance beyond the immediate destruction of the drone. Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia have repeatedly faced airspace incidents involving military drones since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. NATO aircraft have previously intercepted drones over the Baltic region, including incidents involving Ukrainian drones that strayed beyond their intended routes.
The latest episode comes at a particularly sensitive moment. The Baltic states share borders with Russia or its close ally Belarus and have consistently warned that the war in Ukraine could produce unintended security incidents beyond the battlefield. NATO maintains a Baltic Air Defence mission in the region, with allied fighter aircraft conducting patrols and remaining ready to respond to potential airspace violations.
Lithuanian officials have not publicly attributed the drone to Russia or Belarus, and the investigation remains ongoing. That distinction is important, as determining whether the aircraft entered Lithuanian territory deliberately, accidentally or as a result of interference with its navigation system could significantly affect the diplomatic and security response.
