Ukrainian officials said the attack involved a large combination of ballistic and cruise missiles as well as drones. Ukraine's Air Force reported that Russia launched 168 drones alongside dozens of missiles. Ukrainian air-defence forces intercepted many of the incoming weapons, including 145 drones and a significant number of cruise missiles, but several ballistic missiles reached their targets.
Residential areas were among those affected. A nine-storey apartment building in Kyiv's Solomianskyi district suffered severe damage, with fires reported on its upper floors. Several of the fatalities were recorded in the area. A children's medical facility and a school were also damaged, adding to concerns about the impact of the strikes on civilians and essential services.
Emergency crews worked through the aftermath, searching damaged buildings and treating the wounded. The strikes also disrupted electricity supplies in parts of the capital, creating additional difficulties for residents and emergency responders. Ukrainian authorities declared a period of mourning as the scale of the casualties became clearer.
The attack has renewed attention on Ukraine's growing shortage of air-defence interceptors, particularly systems capable of stopping ballistic missiles. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly urged Ukraine's international partners to provide additional air-defence equipment and missiles, warning that shortages are leaving major cities more exposed to Russian attacks.
The latest assault comes as the war continues despite renewed international efforts to find a diplomatic path toward ending the conflict. Both Moscow and Kyiv have continued long-range attacks against military, industrial and infrastructure targets, while civilians remain exposed to the consequences.
For residents of Kyiv, the latest strike was another reminder that the war remains capable of reaching the heart of the country. The damage to homes and civilian facilities, together with the loss of life, is likely to intensify pressure on Ukraine's allies to strengthen its air defence capabilities as the conflict enters another critical period.
