Manchester United produced a remarkable response at Old Trafford on Sunday, coming from a goal down to defeat Ipswich Town 5–2 in an entertaining Premier League encounter. Captain Bruno Fernandes was at the centre of the turnaround, scoring a hat-trick as United secured their first league victory of the 2026/27 campaign.
The result was particularly important for Michael Carrick's side after United opened their campaign with a disappointing 2–0 defeat away to Hull City. With pressure already beginning to build, another difficult afternoon appeared possible when Ipswich took the lead in the 29th minute.

Their second goal came in the 56th minute when Jacob Greaves inadvertently turned Harry Maguire's effort into his own net. The goal was reviewed by VAR after a possible handball involving Maguire, but it was ultimately allowed to stand under the current interpretation of the rules.
Fernandes then extended United's advantage from the penalty spot after Matheus Cunha won a penalty. The captain calmly converted, putting his side 3–1 ahead.
He completed his hat-trick in the 68th minute, finishing from close range to underline his influence on a match that had appeared to be slipping away from United earlier in the afternoon. It was Fernandes' second Premier League hat-trick, with both coming in United's first home league match of a season.
Bryan Mbeumo added United's fifth goal in the 82nd minute, finishing a move that further demonstrated the hosts' attacking confidence. Ipswich refused to surrender completely and Chuba Akpom scored a late consolation goal in added time, but it could not change the outcome.
The victory also provided encouragement beyond the scoreline. United registered 33 shots during the match, their highest total in a Premier League game since 2016, while Marcus Rashford returned to the starting lineup for his first league start for the club since December 2024.
For Carrick, the most significant aspect was the team's reaction to adversity. United had conceded first, just as they had suffered a setback the previous weekend, but this time they responded with confidence, attacking purpose and greater control.
Fernandes' performance naturally dominated the headlines, but the victory represented a collective recovery for United. After a difficult opening weekend, the five-goal display gave the club its first three points and renewed momentum as the season continues.
